Welcome to Year 2063 where technology is smarter than it’s ever been - and almost smarter than you. I remember back when I was kid imagining everyone running around with AR glasses. That’s a reality now. Crazy how times change!
My name is Astrid!
I might look like an average dude but I have great ambitions.
My story started one sunny summer day.
I was casually sitting in my room, procrastinating on the internet as I always do.
My mom kept shouting at me to go outside and play. She didn’t like me being in my bed with my AR glasses on all the time. However, I didn’t think much of it. I did what I wanted to do.
My dreams were always centered around being a developer. That day in bed while searching for the new best productivity software for my glasses, I concluded that it was impossible to find. So then I decided I wanted to create it myself. Something, a website or an app that made everyone’s life easier. I imagined an app where you could take notes, plan your life and access your data on the go.
This idea stuck with me and I was unable to let it go…

Why didn’t I act on the idea and turn it into a reality then? Well… simply because I don’t have the required technical abilities. I might be a geek, yes. I certainly know my way around my smart glasses and I know how the globalconnect works. I mean, I grew up with the globalconnect. My mum however… that’s a whole other story. Anyway, developing is an aspiration of mine, not a skill.
Later that day as I sat binging on a can of Prismies watching FlowTube videos, I was caught by surprise by an ad. A man jumped out of the video I was watching and onto my bedroom floor, pointing at me and shouting:
”Do you want to make your own AR app, but you don’t know how? Fear not! We at AR DevGroup have developed a groundbreaking all-in-one course to take you from boring globalconnect geek to a super multi-talented developer! Make the app you’ve always dreamt of today!”
It sounded amazing to me! I asked for the price and was told it cost 200 munits to sign up for the course. A decent price, I thought to myself. But where was I, a 21-year-old jobless nerd still living at home with my mom, going to get that money from?
I decided to to take my dog Kobe on a walk to think about this. Nature was really a place to help me think clearly, so we decided to go to Sector 3 Forestry. In all honesty, I prefered the landscape at Sector 2 Wetlands, but considering the distance between the nature parks, I decided to just go with the one closest to me. I’d much rather fly 4 hours than 8. So I grabbed my hoverboard, buckled Kobe down and we flew off.

As we wandered around the nature park, surrounded by kilometer tall high rise buildings in the distance, I kept pondering about how to come up with the 200 munits.
Money is a very different thing in 2063 than it was just 50 years earlier. Different currencies is a tale from the past. We all operate with munits, short for Monetary Units, and we’re all getting a set amount of munits each month with our Universal Basic Income. But the income I’m getting is going fully to my mother, since she is the one responsible for me. That’s just how the rules are.
Maybe I could ask my mother, I thought. I mean, she took my money every single month forcing me to rely entirely on her for financial support.
I still felt shameful asking her for money. Couldn’t I just rob a bank or something? Hell, why not!
I also had a lot of friends from the globalconnect. Maybe they’d wanna help me?
I really couldn’t figure out what to do, but I ended up making a choice anyway….
